Castle Espie in October

On my way to the 'old caravan' I called into Castle Espie WWT and today I will show you some of the Ducks, Geese and Swans they have in their collection.
If you wish to see more images from Castle Espie go to posts from 7 April, 13, 22 and 23 July 2013.

Chiloe Wigeon

Red breasted Geese

Pale bellied Brent Geese

Ross's Geese

Bahama Pintail

 Baikal Teal

Black necked Swan

Carolina Wood Duck - male

Caroline Wood Duck - female

Cinnamon Teal

These are Cape Teal with day old ducklings.  I found these little ducklings that the centre did not know had been born.  I noticed that some of the ducks were not giving them an easy time so I let the centre know about them. They would collect them and put them into the Duckery until they were big enough to go back into the collection.

Shoveler - female

Ruddy Duck

Red breasted Pochard

Pintail

Before you watch the videos, I understood from a couple of comments from yesterday's post that the word 'caravan'  is not used in America and therefore some are not sure what I mean.  This photo before is my 40 year 'old caravan'.

I have 2 short video which can be accessed at

I hope you have enjoyed coming to Castle Espie WWT to see some of their collection.  Tomorrow I will show you the ducklings I found in the Duckery.

I hope to keep on posting over the next 10 days however I have a friend from the Isle Of Wight who will be staying with me and I will not have the same time to comment on your blogs.  I hope you understand.  Thank you for visiting today.

  1. Hi Margaret, still not posting 'yet' but enjoy dropping into N. Ireland :-). I just love these sanctuaries where the birds etc look so content and happy...and these grounds are quite amazing. Enjoyed the two videos.

  2. I once tried to see a Red Breasted Goose in Norfolk. My mate and I approached the flock of Brent Geese it was with but unfortunately we got stuck in mud. I managed to extract myself but my friend lost one of his wellies. We were covered in mud and had to walk back to the nearest town, one of us half barefoot, on a Saturday afternoon to meet our lift.

    1. HI Stuart Well that made me laugh out loud. I can just imagine that. Not a pretty sight!! I wa wondering what made you think of that incident when you were looking at my blog or was it seeing my 'old caravan' that triggered it? I have NEVER lost a welly!!

  8. Absolutely love it! I marvel at the thought of our Creator giving us such diversity of nature to enjoy! I was out taking pictures of some of the autumn color this morning when an American Bald Eagle followed me along the county highway. Actually, he might have been following the highway, but directly above me for a couple miles. Fun!

  10. Nice trailer Margaret! All those exotic wildfowl are wonderful, making me think how good it would be to find a genuinely wild one when out birding. you had a lovely day with the camera and a lovely day with the weather from the looks of it.

  11. I have seen a black swan and a white swan, but never a white one with a black neck! I love the cute little Pintail, and the Baikal Teal has the most beautiful head I have ever seen on a bird! The emerald green with the white stripes is so striking!!! The Red Breasted Pochard and the Shoveler are also some of my favorites! And the grounds are so well kept that it looks almost like a golf course. A wonderful post for me today, with so many new and beautiful birds to see.

  12. Gorgeous. And I am blown away by how 'green' that first photo is. Sadly firefox is not allowing me to see videos at the moment - or not with sound.

  14. That first shot is of a gorgeous spot! The ducks and geese have a lovely place to take up residence and you really got some lovely 'portraits' of them.
I knew the word caravan and wondered if that is what you meant. I love it! What a neat way to 'get away'. :)

I just now answered on my blog but I'll note here as well that my touch-me-nots are not poisonous. The name refers to the explosive dehiscence of the seed capsules. The mature capsules burst, sending seeds up to several meters away.

  15. it sounds like quite the adventure to get away and escape to the location near to your caravan Margaret. All you need is somewhere to boil the billy and keep your camera equipment ..... A wonderful assortment of ducks and geese!

    1. HI Carole Yes I love it down at my caravan. I do have a 2 ring stove and oven which is great and I used to have a fridge but nowadays I don't. However this year the farmer's wife allowed me to put some things in her freezer and a extra fridge she had in an out house and that was wonderful and made it a lot easy to keep food fresh. Water is in the next field and I have a roll water container which maked it easy to use. You have all the time in the world to do things down there. This year for the first time, I took a radio with batteries which was interesting as I don't listen to that at home and I took my laptop and was able to watch a DVD in the evening if I wanted. Glad you enjoyed the birds. Thanks for comment

  22. This is a superb collection of ducks, geese and swans.
There are some odd things in America, pants are trousers. Vests are jackets unless they are waterproof then they are slickers. Your caravan is a trailer and my house on wheels is an RV. Rickety Van.

I would like to thank you that you remembered me even though I was not with you on the blog.
    Thank you very much.
Your birds are always very photogenic.
Very rarely have the opportunity to see the beautiful water birds ...
    Photos are excellent as always.
    I send greetings.

  24. In my country, the trailers also called Caravan.
In the museum you can see black hearses that were pulled by horses.
Such Krawan transported to the cemetery late ...
    I send kisses and greetings.
