The Hercules moth
(Coscinocera hercules) is Australia's largest moth and has the largest
documented wing surface area of any living insect, totaling roughly 47”
The adult Hercules moth (Coscinocera hercules)
has an extremely short lifespan of only 10 to 14 days. Because they lack mouths
and do not feed, they rely on energy stored during their larval stage to find a
mate and reproduce before dying. The caterpillar phase, however, lasts roughly
2-3 months.
This one was photographed just outsie Botanica House.
