THROUGH MY LENS

The beautiful Ulysses butterfly is found in various stages in some trees at Botanica Lifestyle Resort.  Here I have photographed 3 stages until it becomes an adult butterfly. (backwards)

It has a wingspan of about 14 cm (5.5 in), but depending on subspecies has some variations in size (western subspecies largest). The upperside of the wings are an iridescent electric blue; the underside is a more subdued black and brown. The colours are produced by the microscopic structure of the scales, a phenomenon called structural colouration.

HERCULES MOTH

The Hercules moth (Coscinocera hercules) is Australia's largest moth and has the largest documented wing surface area of any living insect, totaling roughly 47”

The adult Hercules moth (Coscinocera hercules) has an extremely short lifespan of only 10 to 14 days. Because they lack mouths and do not feed, they rely on energy stored during their larval stage to find a mate and reproduce before dying. The caterpillar phase, however, lasts roughly 2-3 months.

This one was photographed just outsie Botanica House.
