Birds at Ryde Beach, Isle of Wight

Following on from showing the Sanderlings on another part of the Ryde beach yesterday, I saw these Oystercatcher, Turnstone and look close and you will see 3 Sanderling.  You will see from the second shot that I had to zoom and crop heavily.  There is a short video of these birds at the end of the post.

A few of you wished to know about the Sanderling in yesterday's post that had coloured bands on its leg.  The Sanderling (Calidris Alba) in my photo is B6BWYW. (BTO internatonal ref would be LBBW,RBY,BF,W) It was ringed at Eastoke Hayling Island by Peter Potts on 18/9/2013 and have been seen and recorded several times after that.

WILD BIRD WEDNESDAY - Sanderling at Ryde Beach, I.O.W.

If you follow my blog you will know I am on the Isle of Wight at present and the other day, my friend Eileen and I went to see the Sanderling on Ryde beach and these are the shots and video I took.  Some of the video is slow motion.

The Sanderling (Calidris Alba) in my photo above is B6BWYW. (BTO internatonal ref would be LBBW,RBY,BF,W) It was ringed at Eastoke Hayling Island by Peter Potts on 18/9/2013 and have been seen and recorded several times after that.

The first 2 video clips on the video are at normal speed however the last clip I shot  in slow motion and it is of the Sanderling in the first clip fending off another Sanderling who was trying to take food from him.

Sanderlings at Ryde, I.O.W.

The first and third day, Eileen and I started birding down at Ryde Esplanade where on both occasions we saw these little Sanderling running up and down the beach.  A few of the photos are Eileen and you will see near the end, that we spotted 2 with coloured rings on.  Eileen sent the information to the correct researcher and received details back which I will share with you later in the post.  At the end there is a small video of both Eileen and my clips.

 

 

 

 

This is the view we had of the Sanderlings.  I wonder can you even see them?

 

 

This view is a bit closer and you can see the difference between the size of the Sanderlings, Oystercatcher, Black headed Gulls and Dark bellied Brent Geese.

These last 4 shots are the Sanderlings we discovered with coloured tags on.

 

 

As you can see both birds have different coloured bands.  However both birds were catch at the same place which was Eastoke,Hayling Island Hampshire and both were ringed by Peter Potts of the Farlington Ringing Group.  One on the 19 August 20013 and the other on 18 September 2013. 

 

 

 The next sightings of these 2 birds were by us on the 2 December at

Ryde East Sands, I.O.W.

 

I hope you enjoyed seeing these Sanderlings and now you can see them in action on the beach.  They sent us a lot of interesting information on the research being done on these little birds.

Quarr Abbey

One of my jobs on the I.O.W. is to walk my daughters dog, Charlie.  Yesterday, we walked to Quarr Abbey, Ryde where the St Benedictine Monks live and work.
Quarr Abbey is in the country so as I walked I heard and saw a lot of the small birds overhead in the trees and dashing from one place to another.

The Monks have an orchard and grow a lot of vegetables and farm sheep and pigs.  This sow had 11 piglets.
This was the first time this year I have been able to photograph primroses in the wild.  What a wonderful sight on a very damp and dull day.

The path took me down to overlooking the sea where I saw 20 Dark-bellied Brent Geese.  I saw numerous Carrion Crows feeding in fields and 2 Buzzards flew overhead.

We stopped for a short break at the coffee shop.  Next time I will go and see the Art Gallery and explore some more of the wonderful paths.
