FRIDAY'S HUNT and WEEKEND REFLECTIONS - Amsterdam Zoo

For Friday’s Hunt and Weekend Reflection this week, we have the letter Z, favourite and Dessert.  Z is for ZOO and I visited the Artis Royal ZOO in Amsterdam recently where I photographed these ZEBRAS.

The Artis Royal ZOO is the oldest ZOO in Holland, founded in 1838, and is still  enchanting as it was nearly two centuries ago. Not only is the Amsterdam zoological garden an oasis of peace right at the heart of a fast-paced city, but it is also a haven for some 700 animal species and 200 tree varieties, many on the verge of extinction. It  is also one of the fewest zoos in Europe to have so many listed buildings within its grounds, namely the Large Museum (1855), the unique Library building (1867) and the Aquarium (1882).  Today I am showing you the ZEBRAS with a REFLECTION shot and we will finish with DESSERT.

These ZEBRAS are know as Grévy's zebra (Equus grevyi).  They are the largest type, with a long, narrow head, making it appear rather mule-like. They are an inhabitant of the semi-arid grasslands of Ethiopia and northern Kenya. Grévy's zebra is the rarest species, and is classified as endangered

Now have you even really looked and studied the marking of their legs?  Like us with our individual fingerprints, each ZEBRA has different strips and marking from the others.  Isn’t nature wonderful.

A Kudu is passing by without even looking at me!

I made this fresh fruit salad the other day of pineapple,, grapes, 2 kinds of nectarines and peaches, topped with natural yogurt.  Yummy.

Pop in tomorrow to see what other animals I photographed (well some!)

Many thanks for visiting as you might suspect, I do have a lot more photographs taken on that day at the Zoo!!  Be warned.

Also many thanks for all the comments you leave on this post.

  1. What a remarkable and wonderful zoo! The zebras are gorgeous! When I visit a zoo, the zebras are my favorite. Did you know their stripes are not just on their fur, they are on their skin as well. These are stunning!!

  7. Great photos of the zebras...we used to have zebras at our zoo that I loved to visit but they had to be sent to another zoo when we got our polar bears.....apparently zebras can give polar bears a deadly virus...Nature is strange and amazing.
