Ponder At Pond Life

While I was on the Isle of Wight I went and visited Mary's garden pond next door to my daughter's home.  She had told me she had seen a large green Dragonfly and as I had never seen one, I went to see if it would return.  Unfortunately it didn't however I took these photographs and I thought I would show you them.

Common Darter  Juvenile male

I have put this photo in here to show you the size of this insect against the fountain fosset.

Can you see it now?

This is a close up of it.  It is a Pond Skater Gerris lacutris

I hope you enjoyed this post.
Thank you for visiting and I hope you will return tomorrow.

  1. Beautiful photos, and how nice to be on the Isle of Wight. I hope to do the same someday. What a pretty pond. Is that netting over the top, or is it wire? What is its purpose? Sorry I can't identify the insect.

    1. Wow! Just emailed your reply and answer and now the reply button is working!!! Yes it is netting over the pond because there is Grey Heron that keeps stealing the fish!! Thanks for comment.

  2. Great captures! I am really terrible at dragonfly ID .... and I always call you little "bug" on the water a skimmer - because they always seem to skim the water - but I'm sure that is not what it is called :)

  6. That looks like a nice little pond that you friend has there Margaret, I wish I had room in my garden for one, it's amazing how much wildlife they bring in. It's a shame that you didn't find the 'green' dragonfly, but you're spot on with the ID's of the others. the other little bug is a Pond Skater (gerris lacustris)

I've been reading your other posts from your holiday (sorry, I've been busy over the last week or so and was not able to comment at the time of posting!) It looks like you had a fully packed itinerary and visited lot's of interesting places and you captured some great images along the way...[;o)

  17. That first photo is lovely. You got some great captures of the water lilies, too, as well as of the dragonflies, That close-up of the pond skater is pretty neat, with the reflection in the water.
