As I promised yesterday, I am eventually showing you Carisbrooke Castle although I am leaving the Chapel and Gardens until Thursday. There was so much to do that day, that I didn't have time to walk round the walls. People have lived at the castle since before the Norman Conquest and it is deeply steeped in English history. In its time the castle has been a symbol of political power, a fortress protecting England against invasion, a prison and a home. Some of the people who lived there were Isabella de Fortibus,
Sir George Carey, King Charles 1 and Princess Beatrice.
This area was where there had special games for the small children.
The Great Hall which we were not permitted to enter.
Great Hall above and Museum below are managed by the Carisbrooke Castle Museum Trust and contains objects and memorabilia relating to the history of the site, a local history collection and a reconstruction of the
bedroom of Charles 1

The door leads to the present day Museum
Sharon heading for the Museum.
As we entered the Museum there was this gun.
Crossbow and there were many other things to see.
Of course, one had to try out as a 'Knight' in the Gatehouse.
I thought I would leave you today with a black and white shot I took from the Gatehouse of the Courtyard.
I hope you have enjoyed this post and will look in tomorrow when I will tell you about about an Australian bird. Then on Thursday I will show you the very beautiful Chapel and Princess Beatrice Gardens at Carisbrooke Castle.
beautiful structure and a good day's outing, the weather looks perfect Margaret

Hi ER Many thanks for comments and glad you enjoyed the post
DeleteLove Carisbrooke, a really gorgeous place. It was bright sunshine when we went a couple of summers ago. Well worth a visit and it was lovely to see your photos.
ReplyDeleteHI CT Glad you enjoyed seeing it again and thanks for comment. I will try danfind out what dragonfly you had on your post a few days ago but I am just home from holidays this evening.
DeleteInteresting post and great photos :) What fascinated me when we visited was the window that allegedly Charles I tried to climb out of to escape! The donkeys there are great too :) So much to do and see - a great castle :)
ReplyDeleteHI RR Yes I also heard of that window! Glad you enjoyed seeing the castle again and thanks for comments
DeleteI'm usually not a fan of black and white photos, but it's a good format for your photo of the castle. Another interesting post.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda that photo was really an accident. I gave Sharon the camera to take me in the knight's costume and when she gave it back to me, it had taken the photo of me in B&W, Sepia and colour!!!! I could not find hhow to fix it quickly adn fortunatley I was near the end of my visit so I took that shot in B&W.. When I got home, the camera had also taken it in sepia and colour!!! Haven't I got a clever camera!! I forgot about it until the next day adn when I took more photos, it was working normally again!!! However, considering the age of the castle, i thought the B&W suited that photo! Thanks for comments
Deletei like all the stonework and those pretty arched windows!
ReplyDeleteHi Tex Glad your liked the wondows adn arches and thanks for comments
DeleteFascinating tour!
ReplyDeleteHi Terri Thanks for comment
DeleteBeautiful day out. When I was about 25 years, I used to make reproduction of the seal to Carisbrooke Castle. Sorry I said that, lol.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Thanks for comment
DeleteYEAH, I just returned at a good time, I would have hated to miss this! I cannot wait to see the bird, is is a kookaburra? Gosh, I did not know about the crossbow, that it could penetrate armor, this was so interesting!!! Did you also know that armor was so heavy that people wearing it had to be lifted onto the horse. It was called "being horsed". I also cannot WAIT to see the chapel and gardens.
ReplyDeleteI love stone buildings....and the day looks absolutely lovely! It also looks popular with the tourist crowd.
ReplyDeleteHI CHris Yes these old stone building are wonderful. Thanks for comment.
DeleteThe Knight Kit looks good Margaret, would have been appropriate wear for Saturday night in A and E.{:))
ReplyDeleteYes for the doctors and nurses! There may have been less patients!! Thanks for comments.
DeleteWonderful! Wish I was there! The best vacation I ever took was to visit ruined castles in Wales. Such fun to see all that ancient history and climb around the ruins. We don't have stuff like this in the USA, so it is fascinating to me.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary Gad you enjoyed seeing the Castle. Thanks for comments
DeleteHi Mary Yes the whole day was wonderful. Indeed I really did not see it all so next time I may go back again. Thanks for comments,I appreciate them.
ReplyDeleteSaw you over at Adrian's blog and decided to visit. Glad I did! This is very educational as well as entertaining. The photographs are just great and including the signs (if I should call them that) was thoughtful. Thank you.
