Hersey Reserve at Seaview, I.O.W.

The Reserve at Seaview,  I.O.W.was named after Alan Herse y - 1931-1999 who from a young boy showed a great interest in Seaview and the surrounding area.  He grew up closely to the salt marches, reed beds and the shoreline at Seaview Duver.  Later in life he served the local community as County, Borough and Parish Councillor for many years sharing his enthusiasm for the natural and coastal environment for both residents and visitors.  The first 3 photos are taken at the sea across the road from the reserve.  There will be a short video at the end.

These Little Egrets are really stepping out in style.

My first attempt  at a flying Dragonfly. All the following ones are
Migrant Hawkers.

Speckled Wood

Views from the hide in the reserve.

The low lying area of open water, marshlands and meadows is attractive to a wide range of wildlife. They are drawn by the undisturbed feeding, roosting and nesting habit.  The area is part of a system of wetlands and estuaries around the Solent coast.  The presence of migratory birds gives the area significance in international terms.  For those reasons, the reserve is designated as a Ramsar site and  a site of Special Scientific interest.

At the end of the water a muddy strip has been created to provide more areas for wading birds to feed.  Some of these birds also feed on the foreshore at low tide, probing for worms. small crustaceans and snails.  The meadow beyond the open water is managed by grazing to keep the vegetation low as the waders and waterfowl  prefer good sight lines in all directions.

This Little Egret was on the reserve.

As well as the birds I photographed in this post, there were Moorhen, Mallard, Grey Heron and Black headed Gulls and Dunnock.

I hope you enjoyed looking around Hersey Reserve at Seaview, I.O.W.
and although it is small, it is very peaceful.

Thank you for visiting.

  15. Margaret, you are very lucky, you can admire the reserves of birds and beautiful nature.
I admire the dragonfly photos. It is difficult to photograph this very quickly fluttering insect.
    All the best.
