SATURDAY CRITTERS - Little Bee Eater at Ngala Beach Lodge

Today is my last post from Ngala Beach Lodge and today I am showing you photographs and video of the Little Bee-eater. Enjoy.

Little Bee-eater - Merops pusillus

A tiny, green-backed bee-eater with a yellow throat,
black collar and rufous underparts.

In flight, shows conspicuous rufous flight feathers with dark trailing edge; underwings are entirely rufous.

 Tail square or slightly notched.

Central tail green; rest of tail is rufous with black tip.
Juvenile has paler, buffy throat and lacks a black collar; breast tinged green.

Voice: ‘Zeet-zeet' or ‘chip-chip'.

Common resident in savanna, woodland, forest edges and around wetlands.

Below is the owners lovely little Dachshund dog.

All this week I have been posting about the photographs I took at Nglala Beach Lodge so if you have missed any and want to see the previous posts, just look back to these older posts.

I hope you enjoyed this series.

We move on on Monday to have lunch on a beautiful beach all by ourselves.

  21. Amazing shots of this adorable little bird. Have never seen one of these in my area. Does somewhat remind me though of the hummingbirds. Do they actually eat bees? Also what a cute little dog!

  30. Such a cute bird, so adorable with its feathers all fluffed up. It's plumage is so colorful, I like the middle photos where I can see the aqua over its eye, and I like the rufous color and black eyestripe, it always gives birds such character.

  37. Hi Margaret, Although I haven't had much time, I did thoroughly enjoy all of your Nglala Beach Lodge pictures... Gorgeous place... I love your Bee-eater too.. Do they really eat bees --and is that how they got their names? Love the close-ups showing off their colors.
    Hugs,
    Betsy
