While I was VISITING
the Isle of Wight, I saw this VIBRANT double rainbow having the VARIOUS colours lighting up the late evening sky but I could
not get back far enough to shoot both complete rainbows at same time. However it is VERY timely for this post today to fit in with Friday’s Hunt and Weekend Reflections as the letter
is V, Favourite and Thankful.
Newton, who admitted his eyes were not very critical in
distinguishing colours, originally (1672) divided the spectrum into five main
colours: red, yellow, green, blue and VIOLET. Later he included orange and
indigo, giving seven main colours by analogy to the number of notes in a
musical scale. You can see part of the REFLECTION of the rainbow in this shot below.
There is an easy way to remember them (a mnemonic):
- Richard Of York Gave Battle In VAIN
These colours are the "VISIBLE" part of the
sun's radiation. But there are many other parts that are not VISIBLE to the
human eye. For example:
- immediately below red is "infraRED"
- immediately beyond violet is "ultraVIOLET"
(UV)
I am VERY THANKFUL that God in Genesis 9 v 17 gave Noah and us this promise.
Then God told Noah and his sons, “I solemnly promise
you and your children and the animals you brought with you—all these birds and
cattle and wild animals—that I will never again send another flood to destroy
the earth. And I seal this promise with
this sign: I have placed my rainbow in the clouds as a sign of my promise until
the end of time, to you and to all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow
will be seen in the clouds, and I will remember my promise to you and to every
being, that never again will the floods come and destroy all life. For I will see the rainbow in the cloud and
remember my eternal promise to every living being on the earth.”
I hope you have enjoyed this post and
thanks for visiting and commenting today.
The double rainbow is amazing. The colors in the sky are fantastic as well.

Nice rainbow and very nice pictures of it, Margaret. I have a few rainbow pictures on my blog too. Thank you for the reading of God and Noah, it is nice to have that reminder. Rainbows generally remind me.
ReplyDeleteYou probably know that dogs can't see colors, they only have two receptors in their eyes while humans have three to detect the Color Spectrum of light. Quite a few birds can see Ultra Violet as those that do have four receptors.
..
Beautiful! I appreciate the information too.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful rainbow - it was indeed very vibrant. I do love atmospheric phenomena, even though I don't see exciting examples very often. Sun dogs are another phenom that I try to capture when I see them.
ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful rainbows!
