This is a Hawk Moth with the scientific name of Gnathothlibus eras.
The hindwings are bright orange
with dark margins. The females have broader dark margins than the males. The
males are smaller than the females. The female moths have a wingspan of about
10 cms. The male moths have a wingspan of about 8 cms.
I ‘think’ this is a male as the
male has hairs covering most of its forelegs.
I photographed it at the
Botanica bowling green.

Wow, they really do look like airplanes from the 40s.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fine looking moth, and it is unusual for them to sit still for a photo. Lovely.
