If you have been following my blog all this week when I have
been posting from Vwasa Lodge Malawi, you will have already seen some Elephants
previously that were in the bush. Today, as
you will see in the VIDEO at the end of this post today, these Elephants are coming
down to the watering hole and we think there were 3 different herds.
Someone asked if an armed guard was necessary. It certainly was, because when you are allowed out of
your car or are on a walking safari, any wild animal can come and attack
you. Even, you will notice when we were in
the car (on video), we had to be very mindful of any animal coming up behind us
without us seeing it and Jon, my son in law was always ready to put the car in
reverse or quickly move to get out of any danger if necessary which we did on occasions.
Any comment on a previous post was - do Hippos get on with the
ducks? (Tuesday's post). Yes because they are no threat. Also Hippos are vegetarian but are also
the most dangerous animal. They kill
people indeed, but they don't do it for the meat. They do it because they feel
threatened by human beings, many of them who travel in boats and intrude into their
territories. They frequently overturn boats. They are also hunted for meat by
human beings. It is one reason their numbers are declining quickly. Keep watching as there are more Hippos photographs to come especially on the video on Tuesday (WBW).
I have to say we stayed 2 nights at this lodge and we saw
the Elephants come down to the water hole often and I never tired of seeing
them and found it a great privilege to be there. Enjoy the rest of photographs. I loved the babies.
CLICK HERE if the video dos not appear below. Sorry about the wind sound.
I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I lovely doing
it. It brought back some many memories
for me.
I will be continuing my post about my trip in Malawi next week, so I hope you are not geting sick of them.

Many thanks for visiting and also to those who leave comments.
Wonderful, wonderful elephants pictures and video! And even a baby!! I must say I had wondered about the hippos and ducks too.
ReplyDeleteMama elephant herds and their young are indeed dangerous. You got brilliant coverage, Margaret. People are often irresponsible when going into wild animal territory. Here in SA the after animal attacks on humans those animals are shot. I would wish the opposite to be done! To your question on the ID about the bird in my Skywatch post: I had to check with SIL and it's a White-eared Barbet! A lifer for me. Thanks for always visiting my blog. And please continue with these interesting Malawian posts. Jo
ReplyDeleteIt's always a pleasure to see the elephants, in blog reports but even more in nature. Impressive animals, almost representitives of days gone by. Especially the young ones are cute, with many times their typical naughty behaviour of playing children.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing sight. And privilege. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Elephants are my favourites, beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHello Margaret, I love seeing the elephants. What a cool experience for you. The baby elephant is so cute. It is so much nicer to see the animals in their own habitat than in a zoo. Great photos and video. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Have a happy weekend!

ReplyDeleteAmazing shots. It IS a privilege to share this world with such creatures. YAM xx
It's hard for me to imagine being in the bush with wild elephants. Once I did feed an elephant a peanut, that is quite an experience with the rather wet slobbery fingers on the end of the trunk. It is weird looking them in the eye too. The babies are adorable, I especially like the one that got totally wet, what fun when you have a built-in snorkel!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat to see these photos, Margaret. You had such a lovely adventure visiting your family.
ReplyDeletePersonally I don't think I will ever get tired of seeing these magnificent animals Margaret. The video was fascinating to watch and see how the more mature members of the herd look after the younger members, they're truly sociable animals. The bull elephant was huge!
