THROUGH MY LENS - The irish Workhouse, Portumna, Co Galway, Ireland (Part 1)

This post is about the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna, Co Galway which opened in 1852 and I found the history and buildings extremely sad and moving and was horrified when families entered, they were all split up and probably never saw one another again. There is a lot of reading in this post and the second part of it will be published this Wednesday.
I am linking with THROUGH MY LENS.

There is a very interesting LINK regarding this workhouse if you wish to avail yourself of it and want to learn more about the history of it.

Part 2 will be on Wednesday.
Many thanks for visiting and also for your comments.

  1. How very sad! I hope nothing like this exists today. Hopefully we can all learn from this sorrowful history.

  2. It is a heartbreaking tale isn't it? No wonder so many families resisted going until there was no choice.

  6. Good documentary photos of this sad place. This is such a hard history. My family lives in the U.S. because of the potato famine.

  7. This post just broke my heart! How horrible! I knew about the famine, and the migration that resulted, but never had heard of the work-houses. So terribly sad!!!! Mom & I visited Galway on a tour many years ago. This of course was not part of the tour. If I ever get to go back I will make sure I go see this place.
