SATURDAY CRITTERS - Hippopotamus and Cattle Egret in River Shire

I am still showing more photographs what Judith and I saw were in a boat along the River Shire in Malawi.  Last Saturday I showed you Elephants however this week it is the turn of Hippopotamus and a lonely Cattle Egret with a few cattle on the banks of the river.

I am linking this post with SATURDAY CRITTERS.

Many thanks for your visit and also to all those people who leave comments.

  8. I always smile when I see carp title egrets around horses, so seeing this one on the hippo makes me want to laugh! He's just doing what cattle egrets do, no matter who their host is ... Makes a great picture...all the hippos are wonderful, it must be so amazing to see them in the wild. There is one of those Wildlife safari parks in Oregon and spotting the hippos rising out of the mud was really fun...but not nearly as neat as the way you did!

  13. How amazing to see these magnificent animals. We watched a nature program this morning with Jack Hanna and he highlighted his trip along the river seeing hippos in the water. Amazing!

  14. I just love, love, love that first shot of the hippo! How cool! The poor cows look way too skinny for me. Of course, I tend to have fat animals here. They might be spoiled with the buffet I serve. Thanks so much for joining Friday's Hunt.

  15. Love your Hippo, Margaret. Would he/she be one that you could pet. It looks rather tame and satisfied. Love the egret shot also, the last one. We have the cattle egrets here in Texas, lots of them, way more than one per cow which Texas has many. I don't recognize the breed, is it a wild beast?
Thank you for visiting my Friday Hunt, I will go look for yours now. Please come again.

  16. Jim. These Hippos are all very wild and are the most dangerous animals in the world. If you are referring to the cattle, yes Jim it is wild also.

  21. The delicate looking Egret beside the ungainly and huge Hippo is quite the comparison.

  22. The big hippos look like menacing monsters (not really :) as they paddle downriver...as if the egrets even care! Nice!

  31. Just being able to see a hippo has to be a thrilling experience! Since we're very familiar with the size of a Cattle Egret, it's amazing to realize how large a hippo really is!

Gini and I hope your weekend is wonderful and that planning for your Costa Rica trip is going well.

  35. Those hippos deserve great respect. They are the most dangerous animals in Africa for humans. Hope you had a long lens and a large boat. Those cattle look starved, even the calf isn't getting enough to eat. If cattle aren't doing well, neither are the people.

    1. you are right to say 'people' are not doing well at least some of them and unfortunately quite a large number of them.

  36. The cattle are such a sad sight, Margaret. They seem to be starving, and not long for this life.

Your hippos look well nourished however - perhaps they found some unwary humans to feast on!

Super images, especially those with the hippo and egret!

    Best wishes - - Richard

    1. it is amazing how cattle can survive but people have a much harder time surviving. Hippos eat grass, about 80 pounds at a time unusaly between dusk and dawn when they come outof the water. Eating humans has been known however it is very rare. They are a very aggressive animal and will attack man, bite adn kill him.

  38. Fabulous pictures of the hippos. What an adventure!

  39. I think that would be a bit scary to see those huge hippos in the water so close to you. I would have to be in a pretty large boat to not feel apprehensive. You got some great shots though
