GOOD FENCES - Mount Stewart Gardens (Part 4)

Let us enter these beautiful gates into the Formal Gardens at Mount Stewart.  Today,we will see the Sunk Garden, then the Spanish Garden and lastly the Italian Garden.

                                                     Sunk Garden

Spanish Garden

The arcades of Cypress designed by Lady Londonderry were inspired by an early 16th-century description written by a Venetian traveller who described how similar arcades were used by the Moors to line the water parterre of the Garden of the Generalife near Grenada. The colour palette comes from the blue/green hue of the Casita tiles and the salmon pink limestone of the decorative well head, which was bought by Lady Londonderry at the
Chelsea Flower Show in 1926

The focal building has a beautiful hipped roof with glaucous glazed tiles, reminiscent of the characteristic roof shape of the pavilions found in the
Islamic Gardens of Spain.

The design of the central pond was inspired by the plasterwork of the ceiling of the Little Dining Room or Breakfast Room, the only room on the ground floor of the house to relate to the garden directly.
You can see the Italian Garden starts at the top of the steps.

Italian Garden

There is a richness to the Italian Garden unequalled elsewhere, in its architectural detail and its planting which is derived from an article Lady Londonderry wrote for the RHS Journal in 1935.

I hope you enjoyed more of the gardens at Mount Stewart.

  1. Dramatic and beautiful.
My personal preference is for less formal gardens, but these could (almost) change my mind. Thank you.

  32. The house is separated at the top by two cantelievered boxes, one is the master bedroom, the other the child's room, each with their own private stair in the center of the home so you cannot directly walk from one bedroom to the next. building a privacy fence
