Deer Rescue

I am back from my birding trip to Scotland (just) and will now start to sort out my  photographs, (so be patient with me), however in the meantime I am sharing this wonderful Deer rescue story that an Australian friend sent me.

Some fishing stories are a little hard to believe but this guy has pictures to prove his story... I've heard of salmon jumping into boats, but never anything quite like this... Tom Satre, skipper of the Alaska Quest, told the Sitka Gazette that he was out with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat.

"Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at us.  We could tell right away that the young bucks were distressed. I opened up my back gate and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals onto the boat. In all my years fishing, I've never seen anything quite like it! Once on board, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering."

"This is a picture I took of the rescued bucks on the back of my boat, the Alaska Quest.  We headed for Taku Harbour.  Once we reached the dock, the first buck that we had pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back as if to say 'thank you' and disappeared into the forest.
After a bit of prodding and assistance, two more followed, but the smallest deer needed a little more help."

This is Tom carrying the little guy.

"

"My daughter, Anna, and son, Tim, helped the last buck to its feet. We didn't know how long they had been in the icy waters or if there had been others who did not survive. My daughter later told me that the experience was something that she would never forget, and I suspect the deer felt the same way as well!"  I told you! Awesome!"

Our Lord works in mysterious ways...

I hoped you enjoyed this wonderful story.  I did see Red and Roe Deer while in Scotland although mostly at a distance.

Thank you for visiting and for all those who left comments when my blog was not working.

  1. Wow, this is quite an amazing story. They look very much like i did when I nearly drowned once in Hawaii. That would be most shocking to see those animals just swimming up out in the water. So glad they were rescued and really ahve to wonder how on earth they got there to begin with. Glad that you are back and kow you had a wonderful time. Looking forward ( thank goodness) to you photos. I was beginning to worry that you were going to have to begin doing weekly mailouts.....

  10. I saw this story a while back and it affected me the same way then as it does now. Such a bittersweet story.
Usually, when man and wild animal have an encounter, the animal is usually worse off for it. Not in this case!
Great post. Looking forward to your photos...
